Importance and Blessings of Tahajjud Prayer

Tahajjud prayer is the most virtues voluntary prayer. Basically the word “Tahajjud” is derived from Arabic word “hajada” which means that awakes in the night. Salatul Layl is the other name of the tahajjud prayer. There is a lot of importance of tahajjud prayer also reported in many Ahadith. Some Ahadith are given below which tell about the importance and virtues of Tahajjud prayer.

Ahadith about Tahajjud prayer

It is narrated by Hazrat Abu Hurraira that Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said that:-

“Our Lord Descends to the lowest heaven during the last third of the night, inquiring: `Who will call on Me so that I may respond to him? Who is asking something of Me so I may give it to him? Who is asking for My forgiveness so I may forgive him?”

(Bukhari and Muslim)


It is narrated by Hazrat Ibn E Amr that Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said that:-

“The most beloved fast to Allah is the fast of (Prophet) Dawood (a.s.). And the most beloved prayer to Allah is the prayer of (Prophet) Dawood (a.s.). He (Prophet Dawood (a.s.)) would sleep half of the night and then pray during the next third of the night and then sleep during the last sixth of the night.And he would fast one day and not fast the next.”

It is mentioned in another Hadith that Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said that:-

“When the servant of Allah turns to his Rabb in the middle of the
dark night, and whispers to Him, Allah establishes His light in his
heart . . . then He tells the angels: O my angels, look at my servant. He
has turned to Me in the middle of the dark night while the false ones
are playing, and the heedless ones are sleeping; bear witness that I
have forgiven him”.


It is narrated by Hazrat Abdullah Ibn E Salam (RA) that Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said that:-


“When the Prophet SAW came to Madinah, the people gathered around him and I was one of them. I looked at his face and understood that it was not the face of a liar. The first words I heard him say were: ‘O people, extend the salutations, feed the people, keep the ties of kinship, and pray during the night while the others sleep, and you will enter Paradise in peace.”

At another place it is narrated by Salman Al Farsi (RA) that Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said that:-

“Observe the night Prayer; it was the practice of the righteous before you and it brings you closer to your Lord and it is penance for evil deeds and erases the sins and repels disease from the body.”

 

What does Quran Say about Tahajjud prayer?

It is said in Quran E Hakeem that:-

“Little of the night would they sleep. And by the dawn they sought forgiveness”.


At another place it is said by Allah Almighty in Quran E Hakeem that:-

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“And the Rahman’s slaves (are) those who walk on the earth modestly, and when the uncouth address them, they say, ‘Peace. And those who spend the night prostrate to their Lord, and standing”.

 

It is said in Sura E Al Isra that:-

 

 

 

 

 

“As for the night, keep vigil in a part of it: an additional (prayer) for you.132 It may be that your Lord will raise you to a Station of Praise”.


The best time for Tahajjud

The last 3rd portion of the night is the right and best time for perfuming Tahajjud prayer.

Rak’ahs of Tahajjud prayer

There is not specific rak’ahs of Tahajjud prayer. One can offer a lot or little.

We can see that there is a lot of importance and blessings of offering Tahajjud. Ahadith and Ayat have told its importance. So we should offer this virtues prayer. May Allah make us able to do worship with whole heartedly (amen).
