What does Islam Say about Dreams?

In our life we meet with two types of people. On type of people does not believe on dreams. They deny the significance of the dreams and disregard them. The other type of people is that who totally rely on dreams. They have strong belief that dreams control their life. They have so much strong believed in dreams that they make decisions according to their dreams.

What do Quran and Sunnah say about the dreams?

Basically when we sleep it is a minor death. Our soul departs our body when we sleep and it enters in our body when we wake up. So we can say that we can daily we taste the death.

It is said by Holy Prophet (PBUH) that:-

“True dreams are one of the forty-six parts of Prophethood.”
(al-Bukhaari, 6472; Muslim, 4201)

At another place it is said in Hadith that:-

The truthfulness of the dream is related to the sincerity of the dreamer. Those who have the most truthful dreams are those who are the most truthful in speech.

How many types of dreams are there?

It is said by Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) that:-

“Dreams are of three types: a dream from Allaah, a dream which causes distress and which comes from the Shaytan, and a dream which comes from what a person thinks about when he is awake, and he sees it when he is asleep.”
(Al-Bukhaari, 6499; Muslim, 4200)

So according to this Hadith it can be said that there are three types of dreams:-

1. Dreams that come from Allah.
2. Dreams which come from Satan.
3. Dreams which are related to our thinking. Its mean that while awaking what we think is also one kind of dream.
How does Satan disturb us while sleeping?

As the main objective of Satan is to disturb us so he tries his best to fulfill his objective. He disturbs u s by two ways:-

1. By making scary dreams Satan disturbs us. The main goal of his is to make weaken our faith or to make us sad by these scary dreams.
2. The second way to disturb us in dreams is to make the dreams that he/she is committing sins or some unlawful action.

What one should do when he/she sees bad dream?

As Quran and Hadith gives the solution of every thing and no matter is left without solution the same is with Bad dreams. In Hadith it is told that what one should do if he sees bad dream. It is narrated by Hazrat Jabir that:-

“If any one of you sees a dream that he dislikes, let him spit to his left three times, and seek refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan three times, and turn over from the side on which he was sleeping.”

What one should do when he/she sees good dream?

• H/She should praise Allah Almighty.
• H/she should say thanks to Allah Almighty.
• H/she should feel happy.
• H/she should share it with those who love him.

Whether a dream should be share to anyone or not?

When a person sees a bad dream he should not tell to anyone about it as it is said by Hazrat Jabir that:-

Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said, “I dreamt that my head was cut off and I was chasing it.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) rebuked him and said: “Do not tell anyone how the Shaytaan is messing about with you in your dreams.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 2268)

One should not tell a lie about dream which he has not seen. It’s a sin and he will be punished as it is said in Hadith that:-

“Whoever tells of a dream that he did not see will be commanded [on the Day of Resurrection] to tie two grains of barley together, but he will never be able to do it”.

May Allah give us power to live life like an ideal believer (Ameen).
